April 5: Recognition

Read 1 John 5:13-21

With each of my children, I was amazed at how they recognized my voice even in their earliest moments.

They would turn their tiny faces toward me. It wasn’t long before their eyes would sweep the room, searching mine out and recognition would dawn in their first smiles.

We all seek out the familiar. The Lord made our minds for that purpose.

The Apostle John wrote, “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true.”

Our minds search back and forth, using full-orbed reasoning to discern reality. To do that, we must make connections. We must recognize the familiar and identify the unfamiliar.

The writer of Hebrews quotes the Lord, “I will write My laws on their minds.” Once we accept Christ, His Word becomes familiar.

Not only that, but His voice becomes familiar too. “The sheep follow Me, for they know My voice…I am the Good Shepherd. I know My own and my own know Me… they will listen to My voice.”

The Lord empowers our minds to seek out the familiar sound of His voice, the reality of His Word, the goodness of His purpose.

Loving the Lord with all our minds means recognizing His Truth and His voice. It means using our minds to know Him.
